Why I keep writing…
I’ll be honest, sometimes it can be discouraging being a writer, especially a brand new one! It’s certainly not for the money, although I’m happy to report we’ve sold our first 100 books! The reason I keep writing is because I love to help light up children’s imaginations. One of our first reviewers, Ali Elly, of Ali Elly Designs sent me a personal note with her review that made my heart sing:
“On a more personal note…I am based in Northumberland, which is the most Northern English county. We border Scotland so visit often, the description of the landscape in the book is spot on. This story could rather spookily fit my own ancestry. We come from a long line of fishermen and women who lived in cottages from this very part of Scotland, even more bizarrely we have previously traced Irvings to our name.
Once I had finished this book I reread it with my 9 year old daughter. She really enjoys swimming in the sea and would love nothing more than to be a mermaid. She was so taken with this book and our own family history that she spent some time reexamining her own
toes…just in case!”
I also followed up with Beth Nadeau, the wonderful librarian at the Black Watch Memorial Library where I did my first reading. She told me that she had read the book with her granddaughter during their summer vacation in Maine, and that her granddaughter saw a rainbow the first day they were there. She and her younger brother were convinced there was a mermaid somewhere just below the waves.
So, while we haven’t made the New York Times Bestseller List yet, I intend to keep on writing! In fact, we’ve had so many requests for a sequel, I think you haven’t seen the last of Halley Armstrong yet!
I’ve been checking out the Cloud Appreciation Society looking for inspiration for what Halley may see next!
Thanks for reading. If you haven’t already done so, please leave a review at The Secret Labyrinth! And help us light up more imaginations by spreading the word!
